Impact of a Yes

What’s something you’d love to see in the future, but know you probably won’t live to witness?

With so much technological advancement, it is difficult to imagine something that won’t be tangible within my lifetime. With technology out of the question, I’m shifting the focus to something immeasurable. I would love to understand the impact of my obedience to the LORD. From my bloodline to those who are not related by blood at all. How many souls were saved because of my yes? This piques my curiosity because throughout my very short walk thus far, there have been many people who have impacted me through their own personal yes to God.

To be clear, I don’t take credit for anything the LORD is doing through me but I do know that there is a domino effect for both obedience and disobedience. I would rather my existence benefit others – not be their detriment. The Bible shows many examples of the impact one person can have on a bloodline or nation through their obedience or lack thereof. The reason we don’t take it serious in this day and age is because we do not document our bloodlines thoroughly. But rest assured, there are members in your bloodline who came long before you who either walked with God or ran from Him. I imagine an invisible string tying me to those who came before me and those who will come afterwards.

What amazes me about studying the Bible, is that oftentimes an individual’s obedience outlives them. When I think of someone with a major impact on their bloodline, I think of Abram who left his family and everything he knew to follow the unknown God. Or maybe Rahab the prostitute, who negotiated with the spies sent into Jericho on behalf of the the safety of her family. Neither Abram or Rahab had an example set for them from their elders on how to walk with the LORD and yet they did so wisely. You too, can and will have an immeasurable impact. Unlike the movies, there are no background characters in this thing called life. No one gets away with living passively as an attempt to not choose who to follow. No choice is still a choice – and it’s not the wise one.

There are also negative examples …plenty. Looking at King Saul’s life comes with HUGE waving red flags all throughout. King Saul was the first king of Israel. At one point, King Saul had grown impatient and fearful in waiting for the prophet Samuel to come conduct the burnt offering for the Lord’s favor in war. Saul took things into his own hands and it was at that moment God took the kingdom away from Saul and his bloodline. It took awhile for it to come to pass, but by the end of King Saul’s story (1 Samuel 31) , Saul and all his sons die on the same day. Because of one man’s disobedience, his bloodline suffered. Another example is when the walls of Jericho fell down and the LORD put a curse in place promising the death of the firstborn and youngest children of whoever decided to rebuild the city. Without context, this seems awfully cruel. Can’t a guy be into real estate?? Jericho was the very first city God gave to the Israelites. That being said, it was the first fruits of all the cities the Israelites set out to conquer and the first fruits belong to the LORD! And it came to pass….

‘In Ahab’s time, Hiel of Bethel rebuilt Jericho. He laid its foundations at the cost of his firstborn son Abiram, and he set up its gates at the cost of his youngest son Segub, in accordance with the word of the Lord spoken by Joshua son of Nun.’

1 Kings 16:34

I’m not here to convince you to follow Jesus but I will say it’s the best decision I’ve made thus far. Since I’ve decided to say yes to the invitation Jesus extends to each and everyone of us, I’ve grown and matured immensely. I no longer allow fear to run rampant in my mind. I’m suddenly open to the idea that every passion and vision God has given me can be my reality. In fact, I’m living in answered prayers right now. My life may not look social media worthy to others but the Behind the Scenes are absolutely amazing. I can honestly say, I am proud of the woman I am becoming. To sum it all up, something I would love to see in the future but probably won’t live to witness is the effect of my yes to writing this blog post.
